On October 17, 2024, the world celebrates the first International Day of Intangible Cultural Heritage, proclaimed by the 42nd session of UNESCO’s General Conference in November 2023. This important initiative aims to highlight the significance of intangible cultural heritage—traditions, customs, knowledge, and practices that are passed down from generation to generation. The European Association of Folklore Festivals supports the initiative and encourages the states that are parties to the 2003 Convention to actively participate in the celebrations. The events and activities organized in September, October, and November 2024 will showcase the richness and diversity of living cultural heritage in various communities around the world. These initiatives will raise awareness about the importance of preserving it and passing it on to future generations. The Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, adopted on October 17, 2003, broadened the concept of cultural heritage and emphasized the need for international protection of its intangible forms. As part of the celebrations, a special webinar titled “Artificial Intelligence and Intangible Cultural Heritage” is being held. This event explores the interaction between new technologies and the preservation of traditions, offering new perspectives for their conservation and promotion. The European Association of Folklore Festivals invites all its members and partners to join in marking this important day and contribute to the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage.
